Here’s Kermit in one of his early appearances. You’ll notice that he doesn’t yet have his collar. Kermit was created in 1955 and Jim Henson coined the term Muppet in 1956, but he would remain a creature whose species was indeterminate until 1965, when Johnny Carson referred to him as “Kermit the Frog.” Needless to say, it stuck and he’s been a frog ever since.
